Explore Five Unique Ecosystems Along The Briggs Boardwalk Trail
This scenic trail offers visitors a chance to explore five distinct ecological communities, including oak scrub, pine flatwoods, wet hammock, fringe marsh, brackish pond, and mangrove fringe. The trail is a circular, elevated 0.5-mile boardwalk that provides an easy and immersive nature experience.
Along the boardwalk, you’ll find numbered stations that provide educational information about each community you pass through. Staff members are available during the winter season to answer questions and point out interesting features.
One of the notable communities along the trail is the oak scrub, characterized by Chapman’s oak, myrtle oak, and sand live oak trees. These resilient species have adapted to the sandy soil and lack of nutrients by spreading their roots laterally and developing thick, waxy leaves to retain moisture. The trail is easily accessible by driving south on US 41 and turning onto SR 951, then following Shell Island Road to the nature center entrance.
While exploring the boardwalk, take the time to appreciate the diverse plant and wildlife that inhabit the area. Facilities at the center include a visitor center, restrooms, a gift shop, and picnic tables, ensuring a comfortable visit.
